As a dedicated brown belt, Sterling Thomas thrives in a welcoming community that encourages individuals to become their best selves. Sterling's coaching journey began with leading kids' classes as a way to spend more quality time with his son, Drawing from his background as a collegiate athlete and his experience coaching various youth sports, Sterling brings a wealth of knowledge and enthusiasm to his Jiu Jitsu instruction.

With 14 years of experience on the mats and 8 years of coaching, Professor Carlos Ramos is passionate about the art of Jiu Jitsu and the strong sense of community it fosters. Nate's favorite aspect of Jiu Jitsu is the camaraderie developed through consistent training with others.

What is Jiu Jitsu?
Jiu Jitsu is a grappling-based martial art that focuses on using technique, leverage, and positional control to defend against and overcome larger, stronger opponents. It is highly effective for self-defense, sport competition, and overall fitness.

Do I need to be in shape to start Jiu Jitsu?
No! Jiu Jitsu is for everyone, regardless of fitness level. Training will naturally improve your strength, endurance, and flexibility over time.

What can I expect from my first class?
Your first class will begin with a jiu jitsu based warm-up, followed by technical instruction and drilling techniques with a partner. The last part of our class is focused on positional training and sparring. Our instructors and training partners will guide you through the process to make sure you feel comfortable and supported.

What should I wear to my first class?
If you don’t have a Gi (kimono), wear comfortable athletic clothing—tight fitting clothing is recommended such as a rash guard and compression shorts or leggings. We will loan you a Gi to use for your trial week! We also suggest wearing slides or flip flops and bring a water bottle!

Do I need prior experience to train?
Not at all! Our academy welcomes students of all experience levels, from complete beginners to seasoned practitioners.

What age groups do you offer classes for?
We have programs for kids ages 5 and up and for adults of all ages and skill levels, from young beginners to advanced competitors.

How often can I train with my membership?
Our memberships include unlimited access to all classes on our schedule, so you can train as often as you'd like.

Is Jiu Jitsu safe?
Yes! While Jiu Jitsu is a contact sport, safety is a top priority. Our instructors emphasize proper technique, controlled training, and a respectful training environment to minimize the risk of injury. We emphasize safety in our kids program through careful partner selection, highly monitored sparring, and frequent drilling of movements that can increase safety.

Do you have a women's class?
No, and that’s because we don’t need one! At JG Academy Stockton, all of our classes are welcoming, safe, and supportive for both men and women. Our instructors are highly experienced in adapting training for women, ensuring that everyone receives the guidance and attention they need to thrive. We foster a respectful and inclusive environment where all students can train effectively, build confidence, and develop their skills.

How do you maintain cleanliness and hygiene at the academy?
We take cleanliness and hygiene seriously at JG Academy Stockton. Our facility is cleaned and sanitized regularly, with our large mat space disinfected daily to ensure a safe and hygienic training environment. We also encourage all students to maintain good personal hygiene, wear clean training gear, and follow proper mat etiquette to help keep our academy a healthy place for everyone.

Yes! We have a dedicated competition program for kids and adults, offering specialized training for those looking to compete.

How does membership work?
Our memberships are simple and flexible—month-to-month with no registration or cancellation fees. Just message us if you need to cancel.

How does billing work?
Billing starts the day you enroll and recurs on that same day each month.

Do I need to buy a Gi from the academy?
No, you’re welcome to purchase a Gi through our academy or from any outside vendor.
